OER “Manual about Circular Economy for teachers in VET” is a document (around 100 pages) focused on Circular Economy developed by the CESAR Project partnership (2020-2022), to be used primarily by teachers in Vocational Education and Training courses aiming to promote awareness raising and skills development of students within the topic of Circular Economy.

It’s available in English, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and German!

What can be found there? It has two main parts:

PART A: INTRODUCTION TO CIRCULAR ECONOMY
PART B: BUILDING BLOCKS OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

In part A, the concept of Circular Economy is presented mentioning its basic principles:
    – Design out waste and pollution, fostering system effectiveness (and minimizing negative externalities).
    – Keep products and materials in use, optimizing yields
    – Regenerate natural systems, preserving and enhancing natural capital
It also introduces the concept behind the main actions that can be implemented to promote the transition to a Circular Economy, namely Regenerate, Share, Optimize, Loop, Virtualize, Exchange.
It has an interesting subchapter about CIRCULAR JOBS ON CIRCULAR ECONOMY, addressing the need to teach about this to enable more apt young professionals!

In part B, the following building blocks of Circular Economy are presented
    – Eco-design
    – Life-long materials and products
    – Regenerative resources
    – Waste as a resource
    – New business models
    – Digitization
    – Collaboration and changes in human behavior

Each building block is presented in a similar manner, from introduction to the topic to links for further reading. The chapters can be used together for a more comprehensive teaching or individually for addressing the topic.
Effort is made to present each topic in an appealing, interesting, and easy to read and understand manner, not limited to text, but also animations, pictures, etc.
For all, there is the concern of providing tips, guiding teachers for practical implementation in classes, trough guiding questions or even structured activities (Q&A, workshop, etc)

Eco-Digithon 2025 teachers: have you performed any similar activity in your classrooms to increase students’ skills and awareness on Circular Economy? Feel free to share!

You haven’t? Why not inspire in this OER and use some minutes of the time devoted to the project to engage the team around the topic!

One suggestion I would have for the 2025 Eco-Digithon teams addressing Circular Economy is to try to identify which of the following building blocks of Circular Economy are at the centre of your projects!!

You don’t know enough to decide? Consider the possibility of developing a classroom activity to increase general knowledge CE building blocks and choose the one that best fits the prototype under development.

Consider a second activity focused on increasing skills about your building block also to better tackle it in the solution!
